Neptune's Harvest Fertilizer's parent company, Ocean Crest Seafood’s Inc., in Gloucester, Mass., inadvertently ended up in the organic fertilizer business. A wholesale fish and seafood company established in 1965, Ocean Crest had a need to dispose of the fish remains created after processing, called gurry. Gurry makes up 60 to 70 percent of the fish after it is filleted. Ocean Crest got together with researchers from the University of Massachusetts' marine science research center and developed the process of turning the gurry into fertilizer, which allows the company to use 100 percent of the fish.
The company’s line includes the Hydrolyzed Fish Fertilizer, Fish-Seaweed Blend, Seaweed Plant Food, Crab Shell or Flour, Kelp Meal and newly introduced Turf Formula.
Two of these products are now being used with great success on turf. Golf course superintendents and landscapers have discovered the many benefits of using the Turf Formula and the Crab Flour.
The Turf Formula was specifically designed for areas where there are zero phosphorus laws. The NPK is 2-0-2. It contains fish, seaweed, humate, Yucca, molasses and a biological. It is a high energy mix that shows greening within days. It really increases the biological life of the soil.
The Crab Flour is finely ground crab and lobster shell. The NPK is 2-3-0, and has 23 percent calcium. It is high in chitin (kite-in) which will get rid of root nematodes, grubs, ants and fungus problems.
