Ron Whitten, architecture editor of Golf Digest, is set to embark on his third architectural venture when he teams up with Tom Clark on the Cutalong Club at Lake Anna in Virginia. Whitten’s previous efforts include The Architect’s Club in Plainfield, N.J. and Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.
The Cutalong Club will be located on a 1,000-acre site in Louisa County, Va., near the town of Mineral. Paul Larner and Matt Benes of Larner Investments are developing the course.
Although a part of the property fronts on Virginia’s third largest lake, Lake Anna, water will not be an integral part of the design. The course will feature 18 unique holes emulating famous design features of holes throughout the British Isles. Charles Blair Macdonald produced the National Golf Links on Long Island in 1911 that contained many similar holes to those selected, such as the Redan, Eden and Punchbowl.
“We don’t plan on copying any holes, rather, we will be using their design characteristics, and matching the existing topography to fit,” says Whitten.
“We found a Redan par 4, a Punchbowl, Biarritz & Gibraltar green site and my personal favorite which is sure to be an instant classic is the 14th, ‘The Railroad Hole.’ We discovered an abandoned railroad bed from the mining operation, which utilized the site from the late 1800s thru the 1930s,” says Clark.
The builders hope to break ground this year with construction to be completed in 2006 and a spring opening in 2007. The course will stretch from 7,400 from the tips to 5,200 from the forward tees, and play and to a Par 72 with returning nines. The tees, fairways and greens will be planted to bent grass with blue fescue roughs and assorted native areas throughout.
