Weather leaving S.C. courses out in the cold

2010 round rebound will have to wait, courses say.

If golf rounds are on the rebound in 2010 along the Grand Strand, we're not likely to see it in the numbers from January.

Temperatures in the first week-plus of the year have consistently been in the 30s and low-40s during daylight hours and in the 20s overnight.

If there are golfers interested in playing in those frigid temperatures, they're being forced to wait for tee times because frost has prompted courses to delay openings until 10:30 a.m. or later. Many courses have resorted to shotgun starts between 11 a.m. and noon.

Rounds at the three-course Sea Trail Resort are down at least 50 percent compared to what they usually are in January, according to Sea Trail president Tom Plankers, and the numbers are close to that or worse at many other Strand facilities.
