Voluntary cutbacks help save water

In the San Diego area, turf managers using "sophisticated methods of moisture control" achieve savings.

Chris Hayman, superintendent at Oaks North Golf Course in Rancho Bernardo, Calif., began saving water when San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders asked for voluntary cutbacks in 2008, reports the Union-Tribune.

The course achieved a 9.2 percent reduction over the previous year. “This year we are on track to match or better that mark,” Hayman said.

One of the tools the maintenance staff uses to help conserve water is a laser thermometer gun that measures the surface temperature of the turf. Greens with temperatures below 97 degrees receive no water, Hayman said.
