Victoria Hills to host FSGA/FWSGA mixed team championship

Event at Deland, Fla. club highlights increased participation by women in golf.

Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla. will host the Florida State Golf Association/Florida Women's State Golf Association Mixed Team Championship Oct. 14-15, 2006.

The amateur-only event will be flighted by handicap and feature 36 holes of competition among 50 teams, each with one male and one female competitor. Teams will compete at stroke play on day one, with a "Modified Pinehurst" format (alternate shot) scheduled for day two. The team with the lowest overall gross score will be crowned champion, with winners in each flight as well. Victoria Hills will play between 6,000 and 6,400 yards for men, and 5,000 to 5,500 yards for women.

The tournament attracts teams from around the state of Florida and highlights increased participation in golf among women and couples. Through the efforts of the United States Golf Association and programs such as Play Golf America, plus the heightened visibility of female professionals, women are entering the game at an ever-growing rate.

Designed by Ron Garl, Victoria Hills has hosted a number of high-profile events since opening in 2001, including a U.S. Senior Open qualifier, the Stetson University Invitational and an Atlantic Sun Conference championship, and will host a U.S. Open local qualifier in 2007. It has also emerged as one of the most highly-decorated courses in the state, garnering "best of" recognition from GOLF Magazine, Golf Digest, Travel + Leisure Golf, Golfweek, the Orlando Sentinel and Golf Life Orlando.

"Victoria Hills is proud to host this unique event, which players consider one of the most enjoyable tournaments on the golf calendar," says David Buth, Victoria Hills general manager. "Our course is well suited to all types and levels of golfers and will present a fun yet challenging test to the mixed teams."

Last year's FSGA/FWSGA Mixed Team Championship winners were Diane Lang of Weston and Doug Ritter of Davie, whose two-round total of 138 took honors at Orange County National Golf Club.
