Employees and officers of USGA member clubs have a new resource to help manage their grounds more effectively.
The United States Golf Association’s Green Section has partnered with the Plant Management Network (PMN), publisher of Applied Turfgrass Science (http://www.appliedturfgrassscience.org), an online peer-reviewed journal, to complement the USGA Green Section Department’s resource offerings, which include the Green Section Record and USGA Turfgrass and Environmental Research Online (TERO).
“As far as publishing is concerned, the USGA Green Section and Plant Management Network have similar goals," says Dr. Jeff Nus, Research Manager of the USGA Green Section and editor of TERO (http://usgatero.msu.edu). "We both want to get research-based information in the hands of scientists and turfgrass managers who can use it. It makes sense for us to partner with PMN, especially since funding from the USGA’s Turfgrass and Environmental Research Program results in research published in Applied Turfgrass Science.”
The partnership also adds value to the USGA membership. Employees and officers of USGA member clubs can purchase individual subscriptions to Applied Turfgrass Science at the discounted rate of $38, rather than the regular $45 price, by subscribing online. The journal is particularly targeted at turf managers involved in soil management, water management, disease management, pest management, and nutrient management. It features research, management and diagnostic guides, industry news, and trends.
“It became apparent some years ago that online publishing was going to represent an increasingly important role in disseminating information,” Nus says. “We launched our online research journal, USGA Turfgrass and Environmental Research Online, in early 2002, but, although research-based, the reports are not peer-reviewed. Applied Turfgrass Science fills this gap nicely and integrates well with our research publishing efforts.”
The Applied Turfgrass Science subscription also includes access to other resources of use to turf professionals, including Plant Health Progress, an online peer reviewed journal covering plant disease, entomology and nematology, as well as efficacy tests for fungicides and nematicides, arthropod management, and biological and cultural practices.
Applied Turfgrass Science is a publication of the Plant Management Network, a cooperative not-for-profit resource for the applied plant and agricultural sciences. Designed to provide plant science practitioners fast electronic access to proven solutions, the Plant Management Network offers four science-based applied journals, four field trials publications, and an extensive searchable database comprised of thousands of web-based resource pages from the network's partner universities, companies, and associations.
