Hubbard, Ore. – In an effort to improve the current set of quality standards placed upon all seed manufacturers, Turf-Seed recently introduced the “Quality Assurance Sod Tag,” a series of seed tests that go above and beyond current testing procedures to achieve sod quality seed.

To be outfitted with the new quality assurance tag, Turf-Seed seed must pass through several tests. In addition to independent visits from Oregon state inspectors, seed fields also are inspected by Turf-Seed’s field department. During these inspections, potential weed issues are noted.
For those lots passing field reviews and the initial state tests, a second seed sample is pulled. A two-pound sample is randomly taken from a minimum of 50 50-pound bags from within a seed lot. From the sample, a small amount of seed is drawn for a secondary sod crop and weed test at Pure Seed Testing’s independent seed lab.
In addition, a one-pound sample is drawn for use in the sod growout program. Using the seed sample, Turf-Seed cooperators and customers plant the seed to determine, and ultimately prove, the quality of the seed lot.
“A seed lot won’t pass through the company without the personal inspection and signature of either myself or Gordon Zielinski, c.e.o. of Turf-Seed,” explains Rose. “We know that sod growers are only as good as the seed they use. So the quality assurance tag is our way of letting them know they can plant with trust.”
