My father once told me that when you finish college it is just the true beginning of your education in this business. College gives you the information you need to begin to understand the technical information required to do our jobs. Understanding research and data is important for us to make strategic decisions and provide great golfing conditions. Nothing takes the place of the experience gained through practical application of what we learn in school and in the field.
Most of what I learned in school in the 1970’s provided a strong foundation for what was necessary to do the job. Many advances have happened since then and it is through a variety of continuing education opportunities that we can keep up to speed. Some of those include:
• Extension Courses
• University Field Days
• Following research
• Chapter Meetings
• Golf Industry Show
• Many magazines
• Twitter
• Webinars
• Podcasts
Make education continual and never stop seeking more information to do your job better. Education and training should be considered an investment in you, your golf course and your team rather than as merely an expense line item.
