Plymouth, Mass. -- PGA Tour player Doug Barron announced he has teamed with Proderma, maker of the exclusive line of sun and skin-care products formulated specifically for active lifestyles, to create the Proderma's Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen campaign.
The campaign will raise skin cancer and skin disease awareness among junior golfers and others ages five through 17 who want to enjoy the outdoors. Under the terms of the agreement, Proderma will donate its Skin Cancer Foundation-approved sunscreen formulas to youth-related charities and junior golf-oriented programs based on Barron's weekly performance at PGA Tour events.
The campaign will begin this week with the Bell South Classic in Duluth, Ga. and the donation schedule is: tournament start (500 units); a made cut (750); a top-ten finish (1,000); and a win (2,000). To lend visibility to the campaign, Barron will wear the Proderma's Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen logo on his headwear, and a new section will be added to the Proderma Products website (www.prodermaproducts.com) to identify the mission, application and benefactors of the program.
Additionally, skin-cancer prevention and related information will be distributed in each market where Barron plays Tour events, and Barron will make himself available to local television, print and radio media to discuss the Cool Kids program its educational goals.
"I am extremely excited about Proderma joining me in a campaign to educate the youth of America about skin cancer, related skin diseases, and the measures they can take to prevent them," says Barron. "I strongly believe we can affect the most change at the junior golf level and with young persons. We can educate and condition them to apply sunscreen before and during every round of golf. Golf is a game for a lifetime, and it is one of the many lifestyle activities in which our youth can be reached to develop better health habits and an understanding of their future skin care needs."
Barron, a native of Memphis, Tenn., is a longtime advocate of protection from the sun's harmful rays. He is a champion of youth related charities and causes, and regularly donates his time and money to the St. Jude Children's Hospital and Le Bonheur Medical Center. Barron believes convincing youths that applying sunscreen before all outdoor activities is the thing to do to ensure the health and longevity of generations to come.
Having turned professional in 1992, Barron rejoined the PGA Tour this season after tying for 26th at Qualifying School in 2004. He is off to a solid start in 2005, finishing fifth at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson and making the cut at the Ford Championship at Doral and the Honda Classic.
"Proderma is proud to be associated with a stand-up person like Doug Barron, and we are excited about the opportunity to team with him to increase awareness about skin cancer and other skin diseases that threaten the health and lifestyle of millions of American every year," says Dan Brown, Proderma's vice president of golf operations.
One in five Americans develops skin cancer, and each year one million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. Educating junior golfers, specifically, and children under the age of 18 in general about skin protection is key, given that:
-- one serious incidence of sunburn during childhood can cause irreversible skin damage that may double the probability of conntracting a life-threatening skin ailment later in life;
-- by the age of 18, most people have received 50 percent of their lifetime sun exposure; and
-- regular application of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 during the first 18 years of life can significantly lower the risk of some types of skin cancer by more than 75 percent.
For the Proderma's Cool Kids Wear Sunscreen campaign, Proderma will make available its SPF 30 Toweletts. The Toweletts feature Proderma's cutting-edge compilation of natural ingredients that absorb, block and scatter harmful UVA and UVB rays more effectively than other sunscreens on the market today. All Toweletts have adhered to medical testing and have received the Skin Cancer Recommended Seal of performance.
Proderma's alcohol-and-oil-free formulas prevent the skin from drying, and its proprietary formulas are developed over extensive periods of time by leading chemists and require considerable financial resources to perfect. All formulas contain high-end ingredients that contribute to the lotion spreading outward from the area of application for the widest skin coverage of any sunscreen ever developed.
