San Diego's first golf course superintendent Don Makie Sr., 86, died unexpectedly earlier this month, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Makie was a staunch proponent for public golf. He opened Torrey Pines in 1957 and saw it mature into one of the most admired city courses in the country.
