Torrey Pines' first superintendent advocated for public golf

Makie, who died on Aug. 12, was instrumental in opening Torrey Pines' South Course in June 1957.

San Diego's first golf course superintendent Don Makie Sr., 86, died unexpectedly earlier this month, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Makie was a staunch proponent for public golf. He opened Torrey Pines in 1957 and saw it mature into one of the most admired city courses in the country.
