As the international Zika virus threat grows, Terminix is once again stepping in to protect golfers and fans at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis from potentially harmful mosquitoes.
For the past few weeks, the company’s technicians have treated key areas of TPC Southwind, including holes 16 through 18, the clubhouse, practice facilities and the volunteer tent, with a potent and eco-friendly mosquito solution. The spray uses sugar from fruit extracts to bait mosquitoes and encapsulated garlic oil to wipe them out. Within two to three weeks of application, the solution reduces populations by more than 90 percent, while keeping green areas safe for people, pets and food.
Golfers should wear long-sleeved shirts and pants whenever possible. The mosquito species most responsible for Zika often bites around the ankles, so long pants and socks are especially important. They should also use EPA-approved mosquito repellents that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. If you’re using both sunscreen and insect repellent, apply the sunscreen first, and don’t forget to reapply the repellent as directed on the label. For increased protection, treat clothing with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated clothing.
