Southern Hills Golf Club is hosting its final round at the end of the year, thus beginning a new era on the Liberty City, Texas, site.
Tempest Golf Club is being built in Southern Hills’ place, owner Joseph M Bruno Sr. has announced. The new course will cost more than $6 million to build and is being designed by award-winning architect and GCI columnist Jeffrey D. Brauer. The Texas-based Brauer's portfolio includes the successful Cowboys Club in Dallas.
“This site is made for golf with the rolling hills, water, trees and general aesthetics,” Brauer said of Tempest Golf Club. “I feel this is destined to become one of the best courses in the state.”
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new golf course will occur just prior to the Finale Tournament at 9:30 am Nov. 19. Tempest Golf Club is expected to open Oct. 1, 2017 and will be open to the public. It is expected to draw play from all over East Texas as well as from Dallas and Shreveport. The club will feature a completely renovated and expanded clubhouse with banquet seating for over 300 guests. The clubhouse renovations are expected to add another $1 million to the total renovation cost. The new golf course will be interwoven through a 300-lot luxury home residential development.
