As part of its ongoing initiative to serve as an educational resource to turfgrass students across the country, Tee-2-Green recently presented to local GCSAA student chapters at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Mississippi State University.
The College Tour initiative helps to educate students on the breeding process and production of developing bentgrass varieties. Each presentation highlights various aspects of creeping bentgrass including how breeders develop and test bentgrass varieties; what techniques are used during seed production, harvesting and cleaning; and the importance of certification standards when selecting bentgrass varieties.
“It is always interesting to hear where the seed industry has come from and where it is headed,” explained Brad Debels, graduate fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “Especially as far as improving cultivars for more disease pressure with less means of chemical control in the future.”
“Considering the history of Penn bents, research and education has always been a focal point for Tee-2-Green," said Bill Rose, president of Tee-2-Green. "The College Tours started as a way to take the information and expertise we’ve gathered over the past 30 years, and pass it along to tomorrow’s turfgrass managers.”
