Spring transition

Spring transition is always an apprehensive time in the southeastern United States.  A gradual transition from the winter overseeded cool season turfgrass to an actively growing bermuadgrass is not easily accomplished.

Bermudagrass normally resumes growth when soil and night temperatures approach 60 degrees Fahrenheit.  Coring for the purpose of enhancing soil warming to promote bermudagrass growth, may result in premature reduction of the overseeded cool season turfgrass. Thus, coring is not used as widely as it once was.  Reducing mowing height is one practice that helps create a smooth transition. Lowering the mowing height when soil temperatures increase will stress the cool season turfgrass and enhance soil warming.
