Interim look at snow molds
Winter is late for most of the northern United States. However, cold temperatures and snow are just around the corner, making for favorable conditions for the snow molds.
As a brief reminder, Coprinus snow mold (pathogen: Coprinus psychromorbidus) is favored by prolonged periods of deep snow cover while snow scald (pathogen: Myriosclerotinia borealis) is favored by deep snow lying on frozen soil. Typhula blight (pathogen: Typhula incarnata, T. ishikariensis) is favored by deep snow on unfrozen turf. Pink snow mold (pathogen: Microdochium nivale) is most severe on thatchy turfs growing slowly. Favorable conditions are cool, wet weather on unfrozen soils.
