Highway Watch is a national program administered by the American Trucking Associations under a joint agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Rick Scott, a safety specialist with Penske Trucking, conducted the 90-minute training session.
Originally designed as a safety program for the transportation professionals, a security component was added after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Currently Highway Watch has 300,000 members nationwide. The goal of the program is to activate and maintain 3 million transportation professionals in Highway Watch at all times.
During the training, drivers learned the “Fatal Five” weapons used by terrorist organizations. The weapons include firearms, package bombs, chemical and biological, radiological/nuclear, and vehicle attacks and transportation.
At program completion, drivers received program identification numbers for reporting suspicious activities to the Highway Watch command center.
