Synthetic Turf International completes Tour Edge golf testing facility

The second floor test site requires creative construction.

Synthetic Turf International, a supplier of putting greens and related synthetic surfaces, recently completed installation of an indoor golf equipment testing facility at Tour Edge Golf in Batavia, Ill.  The project, facilitated in conjunction with STI’s Chicago, distributor Synthetic Turf of Illinois, is a major component of Tour Edge’s newly constructed headquarters and will be utilized by Tour Edge sales representatives and local retail customers alike.

The testing site is comprised of a 1,000-square-foot synthetic putting green, tee line driving range cages and short-game chipping stations. The green, created with STI’s exclusive NP50 nylon putting surface, is surrounded by a border of NF75 synthetic fringe turf. Constructed on the facility’s mezzanine level, overlooking the golf club production facility, the uniquely designed putting course required innovative construction methods.

Fifty tons of base material was required to create the green’s undulations and pitch. The base material was transported by forklift to the second floor, two wheelbarrow loads at a time.

The hitting bays and chipping stations were created with STI’s innovative EZ Tee system, a life-like synthetic turf designed specifically for driving range tee lines. EZ Tee’s innovative composite affords the golfer the option of either hitting off a regulation tee or hitting directly off the synthetic surface. STI’s life-like Zoysia SoftLawn product was utilized to create a challenging greenside knoll for uphill and downhill chipping.  SoftLawn’s resilient surface provides the ideal setting for testing short-game irons while its multi-directional blades provide a life-like appearance.

"This equipment testing site includes all the features of a state-of-the-art short-game practice facility,” states Synthetic Turf of Illinois president Doug Steeves. "We’ve replicated a driving range, created a challenging putting green and a series of target greens. This comprehensive testing facility allows sales reps and customers to test wedges, short irons and putters—in essence every piece of golf equipment needed for every aspect of the game.”
