While everyone tried to avoid the deluge in the desert Thursday, golf course superintendents and their crews were on the front lines.
They forced water to retreat from their fairways and bunkers so play could resume today at the Bob Hope Classic.
“I've never seen this much water on the golf course before,” said Tim Putnam, who has served as La Quinta Country Club's course superintendent for eight years.
Play at the Hope was postponed Thursday, and it was unclear when the rain would end. Putnam and his staff will find out whether Mother Nature was listening to their pleas at 4 a.m. today when they start working.
