Seven Philadelphia-area courses named among 100 'must-play'

GolfStyles Philadelphia magazine included seven Pocono Mountains 'Golf Destination' member courses on its 100-course list.

Pocono Mountains, Pa. –The Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau (PMVB)  today announced that seven member golf courses of the destination, “Pocono Mountains: Discover Golf’s Great Destination Secret” have been named to GolfStyles Philadelphia magazine’s 100 Must-Play Courses of Greater Philadelphia for 2006.

The seven courses – Shawnee, Split Rock, Great Bear, Woodloch Springs, Mount Airy, Buck Hill and Pocono Manor (East Course) – are just some of the many golf options awaiting visitors to the Pocono Mountains, which span a four-county region in northeastern Pennsylvania.

“The Pocono Mountains is known as a destination with something for everyone, not the least of which is its golf offerings,” says Robert Uguccioni, executive director of the PMVB. “It is gratifying for our member courses and resorts to be honored for their golf options which, coupled with the many other amenity and accommodation choices here, combine to make the Pocono Mountains an increasingly popular choice for visitors.”

The Pocono Mountains courses identified by GolfStyles Philadelphia for distinction highlight the juxtaposition between modern and classic golf course architecture, which is a defining characteristic of the golf destination.

Great Bear, Split Rock and Woodloch Springs are modern courses that feature dramatic forced carries and large greens. Shawnee, Buck Hill and Pocono Manor (East Course) are parkland style designs which hark back to the golden age of golf course architecture and feature small, devilish greens complexes which can be reached by playing one’s ball along the ground if necessary.

For good measure, Mount Airy offers a hybrid of the design styles. Its holes are tributes to noted holes at championship courses around the country, some classic, others more modern.

The dichotomy of design styles, besides providing interesting and diverse playing experiences, were crafted in the Pocono Mountains by the likes of legendary architects including Donald Ross, A.W. Tillinghast and Jack Nicklaus.

This is the latest distinction for a Pocono Mountains golf-destination member course. Golfweek ranked Great Bear as the No. 4 best course in the state in its 11th annual, state-by-state ranking of “America’s Best Courses” (March 2006).
