The New Mexico Challenge - a series of four professional golf tournaments featuring some of the game’s best young players on some of the state’s most beautiful courses – travels to Santa Teresa County Club this weekend for the El Paso Open.

The New Mexico Tourism Department and the Adams Pro Golf Series have joined forces to create the New Mexico Challenge - in support of what is quickly becoming a billion-dollar industry in New Mexico: Golf and golf tourism.
The state's golf industry funded a New Mexico State University economic study, released last year, which shows that golf and golf tourism was worth nearly $1 billion a year to the state's economy in the fiscal year that ended June 30 2005.
“This only goes to prove what we have known in the tourism industry for a long time, and it is why our sponsorship of the Adams Pro Golf Series is a natural fit,” said Michael Cerletti, Secretary of the Tourism Department (NMTD). “Golfers will travel hundreds of miles to play their favorite courses, and playing golf in New Mexico is quickly becoming a favorite pastime of golfers everywhere.”

The four-stop 2007 New Mexico Challenge also includes the Inn of the Mountain Gods Classic in Mescalero, played May 17-20 (won by Alex Rodger of Fort Worth, Texas, with a 5-under-par 264); the Inn of the Mountain Gods New Mexico Open September 6-8, 2007; and the Cities of Gold Golf Classic at Towa Golf Resort, September 13-16, hosted by the Rotary Club of Santa Fe.
As the final stop on the Challenge, the highest-placed finisher of the four New Mexico events will receive the New Mexico Challenge Cup and a $10,000 winner’s check presented by the Tourism Department. The Cities of Gold Golf Classic trophy, a one-of-a-kind crystal trophy valued at over $6,000, will be presented September 16 to the winner of the Cities of Gold tournament.

The Adams Golf Pro Tour Series, a subsidiary of the K&G Sports LLC., partneres with local non-profits to conduct professional golf tournaments in the US. These events provide an avenue for professional golfers to hone their skills while preparing for a life on the PGA Tour.
