A new, easy-to-use formulation of Ronstar herbicide is now registered for use on dormant golf course turf. Ronstar Flo herbicide, from Bayer Environmental Science, is a flowable product containing oxadiazon, the same active ingredient as Ronstar 50 WSP.
Ronstar Flo provides pre-emergent control of goosegrass, crabgrass, annual bluegrass and other tough turf weeds, such as annual sedge. The new formulation is registered for use on dormant established bermudagrass, zoysiagrass and St. Augustinegrass. Research trials conducted in multiple states on both university plots and golf courses during 2006 and 2007 showed the product performed well compared to other herbicide brands.
“The new formulation disperses easily in water and mixes in the spray tank better than the traditional WSP and other generic alternatives,” says Ben Cicora, business manager, herbicides, Bayer Environmental Science. “Because of its mode of action, Ronstar Flo controls weeds through their shoots rather than their roots. It will not harm turfgrass roots after application, making it a dependable and effective method of weed control.”
Used at a rate of 2 to 3 lb. active ingredient per acre, the herbicide should be applied to dormant turf in late winter or early spring at least two to three weeks prior to green-up. Ronstar Flo can be tankmixed with post-emergent products such as Revolver herbicide or Finale herbicide to control winter weeds and prevent crabgrass and goosegrass emergence for the entire summer. Applied as a broadcast treatment on fairways, tees and roughs, Ronstar Flo controls a wide variety of annual grassy and broadleaf weeds.
The product is available as an easy-handling, flowable formulation in a 3.8 lb. a.i. per gallon container packed in a 2x2.5 gallon case.
