Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort – home to the state’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature-designed golf course – announced the hiring of Mark Jewell as the new Superintendent.
“Mark Jewell brings years of experience and a wealth of agronomic knowledge to his new position at Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort,” says Steele Edwards, general manager at Rocky Gap – named a AAA Four-Diamond resort for the sixth consecutive year. “We take great pride in the Nicklaus design and Mark has been given the mandate to maintain this championship course at the highest level.”
Prior to taking over as superintendent at Rocky Gap, Jewell served as superintendent at the private, 18-hole Chapel Hills Golf & Country Club in Douglasville, Ga. – host of an annual USGA Women’s Amateur Sectional Qualifier.
“This is an excellent opportunity to be charged with maintaining this beautiful golf course,” Jewell says. “It’s an honor to join such a dedicated staff here at the resort and working on a Nicklaus design presents unique challenges. This course has an excellent reputation and will continue to be a top destination in this golf-rich region.”
Jewell, who earned a Certificate Degree in golf course/turfgrass management from the University of Maryland – Institute of Applied Agriculture, also has managed agronomics at public and private courses in Texas and North Carolina where he’s gained experience in all aspects of golf course management operations including budgeting, purchasing, irrigation and drainage installation and repair, personnel management, and equipment repair and maintenance.
