Here are three stories that help define the Monday before the biggest election in most of our lifetimes, yet none of them have anything to do with the actual election.
First, the death of a truly great American. Love Chicago or hate it, the City of Big Shoulders is a unique place that had a unique voice. That voice was Studs Turkel. And for most of his 96 years, he chronicled the lives of average people. Studs would’ve loved golf course superintendents because you’re people with a seemingly simple job who are anything but simple. Here’s an appreciation in, of all places, The New York Times.

Second, here’s a story – completely unconfirmed but astoundingly funny – about a New Mexico golf course superintendent who apparently finally had enough of a wealthy member with an attitude. The ironic thing is the member in question actually owns the newspaper in which the story was reported. Ah, justice …
Finally, one of my idols, Rick Reilly, has a few words to say about one of our mutual heroes, John Wooden. The Coach has outlived Studs Turkel – he’s 98 now – and any of us who’ve been touched by him in coaching, sports or life should read this.
And oh, by the way, there’s an election tomorrow. You might want to take a few minutes and vote. After all, it’s only the future of America and your community in the balance.
