PTRI plans to award $15,000 in fund-raising raffle

The prize will be awarded Nov. 14 during the annual Penn State Golf Turf Conference.

The Pennsylvania Turfgrass Research, Inc. has announced that the drawing for the $15,000 prize in its new fund raising raffle will be held at Champs Sports Bar and Grill in State College, Pa.  The party culminating PTRI’s fund-raising efforts for 2007 will occur on Wednesday, Nov. 14 in conjunction with the annual Penn State Golf Turf Conference.

PTRI expanded their “Growing the Game” campaign this year by introducing this innovative way for supporters of Penn State’s Center for Turfgrass Science to invest in the future of the turfgrass industry.  The exciting PTRI raffle could also be personally rewarding with $15,000 going to the grand prize winner.  There are additional cash prizes of $1000, plus dozens of golf and outdoor related prizes.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.paturfresearch.org.

In announcing the drawing location, Jerred D. Golden, CGCS, chair of the PTRI Board of Trustees, said “Every ticket sold by PTRI supports the Center for Turfgrass Science at Penn State so they can develop new techniques and products to advance the industry, train the next generation of turfgrass managers, and improve turfgrass to benefit golfers and everyone who appreciates a good environment, but there is no reason we can’t have fun with this too.”  He added. “Although the winner doesn’t need to be present when the drawing takes place, with hundreds of professionals in State College for the Golf Turf Conference, we anticipate the raffle party will be a great gathering.”

Because of the potential impact of the funds raised in supporting turf research, PTRI has encouraged everyone involved in the turfgrass industry to “spread the word about this great opportunity among your family, your friends, and everyone in your turfgrass realm.” PTRI is also looking for volunteers willing to sell tickets in their club, community, and workplace.  For more information on ticket purchases, volunteering to sell tickets, or raffle details contact PTRI by phone (717-580-1946) or by email (denise@heusergroup.com).

PTRI’s ongoing “Growing the Game” Campaign is devoted to support of Penn State’s world-renowned turfgrass research and education. The $1,000,000 campaign goal will create an endowment for the Center for Turfgrass Science. The campaign involves special events like the raffle, as well as soliciting gifts and pledges. A broad volunteer network is seeking annual support from country clubs and their members, businesses and individuals associated with the turfgrass industry, Penn State alumni, from golfers, and from other people who enjoy lawns, athletic fields and environmentally friendly landscapes.

PTRI was established by the Pennsylvania Turfgrass Council (PTC), which has contributed more than $2,000,000 to support Penn State’s research since 1955.  The Pennsylvania Turfgrass Research, Inc. is registered with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations.
