PondHawk’s Sandra Burton and Dr. Tom Fisher of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science joined the 2025 Turf Technology Showcase to discuss the company’s solar-powered, subsurface aeration system. Here are three takeaways from the presentation:
1. Why aeration? Nutrient accumulation leads to eutrophication in ponds, which can lead to impaired capacity, eventually causing flooding, dredging and disruption. Aeration prevents eutrophication.
2. BMP booster. Subsurface aeration, which a solar-powered solution like PondHawk provides, is known as a Best Management Practice for the GCSAA. It’s included in sections: Surface Water Management, Water Quality Management and Energy Efficiency.
3. Less is more. PondHawk’s system lowers energy, labor and chemical costs while reducing odors and floating algal mats.
