All 18 holes at Poipu Bay Golf Course are opened again after an extensive greenside bunker restoration project aimed at enhancing the playing experience and preserving the course’s historical integrity. The project started in mid-August and revitalized Poipu Bay’s iconic greenside bunkers, ensuring they meet modern standards while honoring their original design.
The restoration involved extensive work on 48 greenside bunkers throughout the course, focusing on improving the drainage system, moisture mitigation, and aesthetics to enhance both playability and consistency of the bunkers.
Poipu Bay utilized quality materials from local vendors and techniques that align with sustainable practices, certifying that the greenside bunkers contribute to the overall environmental stewardship of the property.
“We are thrilled to unveil the results of this restoration,” director of golf Chad Dusenberry said. “The greenside bunkers are a significant part of our course’s character, and we are committed to maintaining their beauty and functionality for our guests. This project is a testament to our dedication to providing an exceptional golfing experience.”
The revitalized greenside bunkers feature an enhanced drainage system that prevents water accumulation while maintaining the necessary moisture for optimal playing conditions. Additionally, the course's authentic design is preserved by restoring the greenside bunkers to their original form, capturing its historical essence.
Prior to the greenside bunker restoration project, Poipu Bay completed a year-long multi-million-dollar irrigation renovation in March of this year.
“We are committed to investing in the integrity of the golf course to ensure it meets high standards of quality and excellence for our guests and staff,” said Hiroki Matsuda, director of Kawailoa Development, owner representative of Poipu Bay Golf Course.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Poipu Bay is set between lush mountains and rugged ocean bluffs on the south shore of Kauai. The course hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1994 to 2006.
