The Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents celebrated its 100th anniversary at Union League Liberty Hill, bringing together leaders from across the golf industry for an evening of recognition, reflection and shared history. The event marked the conclusion of the PAGCS’s centennial year and honored the individuals and traditions that have shaped one of the nation’s oldest superintendent organizations.
“Inspirational is the best word I can use,” newly elected PAGCS president Pat Michener of Bidermann Golf Club said. “To gather so many influential people in one room to celebrate the PAGCS was a major feat, and all involved should be very proud.”
The association’s highest honor, the Eberhard Steiniger Award, was presented to John Gosselin, the golf course superintendent at Aronimink Golf Club, which will host the 2026 PGA Championship. Like the award’s namesake, Gosselin represents the pinnacle of professional integrity, mentorship and long-standing contribution to the golf turf industry.
Featured keynote speaker Jay Wright, the hall of fame basketball coach and two-time national champion at nearby Villanova University, delivered a compelling message about leadership, preparation and team culture — drawing powerful parallels between coaching and the role of a golf course superintendent.
A special tribute video — coordinated with the help of Turf Equipment and Supply’s Andy Donelson — highlighted the association’s storied past and featured reflections from former presidents and retired superintendents. It underscored the deep roots of collaboration, education and professional advancement that define the PAGCS.
The centennial celebration was made possible through the dedication and planning of a committed leadership team spearheaded by immediate past president Greg D’Antonio, the golf course superintendent at Concord Country Club; PAGCS executive director Kristen Liebsch; and Bill Corcoran of Baroness USA, the Centennial Committee chair and longtime vendor liaison to the board; as well as former presidents and industry leaders from the GCSAA, Philadelphia PGA, USGA and Penn State University.
“As we mark 100 years, we celebrate not only our history but the people whose passion and professionalism continue to elevate this profession,” the association said in a statement. “This anniversary reflects our commitment to education, innovation, and the next century of excellence in golf course management.”
Founded in 1925, the PAGCS promotes professional growth, education and industry collaboration throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. The association is dedicated to advancing the profession of golf course superintendents through innovation, environmental stewardship, advocacy and leadership within the golf industry.
