It's expected that the USGA will minimize the rough which borders the coastline, furthering the chances of wayward balls finding their way over the cliffs.

Less than 24 hours after its conclusion, the focus at Pebble Beach Golf Links returned to the 2010 U.S. Open and in this case, the toughening of the golf course.

On Monday, Pebble Beach Golf Links superintendent Chris Dalhamer and his crew began the process of narrowing the fairways at the storied course in preparation of the championship, which is slated for June 14-20.

"While all project work has been completed, the next phase involves recontouring the fairways," 2010 U.S. Open general chairman and Pebble Beach Senior Vice President of Golf RJ Harper said. "The USGA has defined a specific width and location for each fairway, and we've begun the grow-in process now to ensure these are well established and ready for the Open Championship next June."

On all of the holes that border the coast — No. 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 18 — it's expected that the USGA will minimize the rough which borders the coastline, furthering the chances of wayward balls finding their way over the cliffs.
