Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Golf course superintendents in the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina have moved 5,000 steps closer to building a brand new home for the needy. Members of the Palmetto Golf Course Superintendents Association presented a check for $5,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Horry County during the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association annual Conference and Trade Show. The gift raises the amount Palmetto GCSA members have raised for Habitat for Humanity in recent years to $31,000. Habitat for Humanity needs $50,000 to build a new family home in Horry County.
“I am so proud of our members and how willing they are to find the time and the money to give back to their community,” Palmetto GCSA’s outgoing president, Bob Graunke, CGCS, says. “The past few years have been challenging for the golf industry but still our members have turned out at our fundraisers and supported people less fortunate than themselves.”

The latest gift from the Palmetto GCSA comes at a time of record need in Horry County. Habitat for Humanity began building homes in the county in the early 1990s and completed its 65th home recently. But in a graphic illustration of how demand outstrips capacity, 113 families attended one meeting in early November to apply for homes.
“We sincerely appreciate the efforts of golf course superintendents in Horry County,” said Sandi Kendrick, Habitat for Humanity’s director of resource development in the county. “It’s phenomenal and really shows that everybody can make a positive difference in the lives of others.”
The Palmetto GCSA has now given more than $116,000 to local charities since it began community fundraising 18 years ago. The association also contributed $1,000 towards a $36,000 donation from the Carolinas GCSA towards hurricane relief in the Gulf states earlier this year.
