San Felipe-Baja California, Mexico - Palmer Course Design is heading south of the border for its newest 18-hole championship golf course. Arnold Palmer’s golf course design company will create its first course in Mexico at Villa Machorro de Cortez, a new resort community on the Sea of Cortez in San Felipe, located 236 miles south of San Diego, Calif.
“The course at Villa Machorro will be like Pebble Beach with mountains,” says Palmer Course Design executive vice president Erik Larsen, who is the architect for the course at Villa Machorro. “It is a beautiful piece of land that will lead to something truly special. We couldn’t be more excited about our first endeavor in Mexico.”
According to Larsen, the multimillion-dollar course at Villa Machorro will be 18 holes of uncompromised golf on a mountainside overlooking the Sea of Cortez, the narrow gulf separating the Baja California peninsula from the Mexican mainland. Larsen and Palmer Course Design project coordinator Chuck Choiniere are designing the par-72 course to capitalize on the area’s stunning scenery. While the layout for the new course is still in the early stages, Choiniere says it will feature dramatic elevation changes and breathtaking views as the field of play will run alongside a cliff above the beach almost 100 feet below.
In addition to the Palmer golf course, Villa Machorro will provide a lifestyle with an array of luxury single-family homes, European-inspired mountain villas and condominium residences and world-class amenities. Among the amenities planned for Villa Machorro are a championship clubhouse and restaurant, beach club with surf side restaurant and bar, hotel and spa, extensive network of nature trails, a town square with cafes and commercial facilities, two private beaches, on-site medical care with pharmacy, 24-hour security within the gated community, gorgeous landscaping throughout the community, and secured RV and ATV storage.
