Sun City Hilton Head in Bluffton, South Carolina, recently started a six-month renovation project on its Okatie Creek Golf Course. XGD Systems and TDI Golf are the contractors on the project, which is focused on enhancing turf conditions and playability of the 6,719-yard, par-72 golf course. The course is projected to reopen by October 1.

Designed by former PGA Tour professional Mark McCumber, Okatie Creek opened for play in 1995. The course winds its way through the pines and marshes of the Carolina Lowcountry and has 15 lakes spread throughout the property. As part of the course renovation, all greens will be hulled out and re-grassed with TifEagle turf, while fairways and tee boxes will be re-grassed with Celebration. New drainage systems will be added in all fairways to provide for improved turf health and more consistent playing conditions.

In addition, the club’s practice facility will be renovated and increase in size by 50 percent. When complete, the updated practice facility will have an expanded practice tee to accommodate up to 50 hitting stations and a new short game area with a dedicated putting green, chipping green and bunker practice green.

Scott Denny is the course superintendent.

“With the continued expansion of the Sun City Hilton Head community, our Okatie Creek facility will be a beautiful product for our existing and future homeowners to enjoy,” Sun City Hilton Head director of golf Charlie Kent said.

Sun City Hilton Head is home to three 18-hole golf courses — the executive-length Argent Lakes Golf Course, the casual Okatie Creek Golf Course and Hidden Cypress Golf Course, the crown jewel of Sun City Hilton Head. All three courses are open to public play.
