Suffern, N.Y. – The New York State Turfgrass Association, in cooperation with Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Professional Landscape Association of Rockland County, the New York State Turf and Landscape Association, and the New York State Association of Cemeteries, will host its Southeast Regional Conference Feb. 27 at the Holiday Inn Suffern in Suffern, N.Y.
This year’s conference will begin with coffee and registration at 6 a.m. and end at 3:45 p.m. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has approved 16.75 pesticide recertification credits. The International Society of Arboriculture has awarded eight continuing education units. The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America has awarded .65 education points for this program. New Jersey and Connecticut recertification credits will also be available.
Michigan State University’s Joseph Vargas, PhD. will present an early bird session on risk assessment, followed by legislative and regulatory updates during the morning general session. Late morning sessions will feature topics related to golf turf, lawn and landscape and sports turf. In addition to these sessions, the afternoon sessions also will include a cemetery maintenance round table discussion and New York State Department of Transportation updates regarding regulations and inspections.
Conference co-chair and NYSTA president, Michael Maffei, CGCS, says this year’s show also will offer three accredited certified landscape technician training sessions. In his CLT training session, Rick Harper, from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Westchester County, will review how to identify trees and their key pests. Richard Heller, chairman of the CLT committee for New York State, will present the best plant and site selection methods for reducing insect infestation and diseases and Joseph Broyles, with Plant Health Care, Inc., will discuss plant health care for the reduction of pesticides. The CLT training sessions will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 2:15 p.m. A lunch and trade show break is scheduled from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. for all conference attendees.
