Rochester, N.Y. – The New York State Turfgrass Association hosted the 8th Annual Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition at the Empire State Green Industry Show in Rochester, N.Y. The competition is designed to test students’ knowledge of turfgrasses and the weeds, diseases, and insects that affect them.
The contest, which took place Nov. 16, 2005, consisted of both hands-on and written tests.
Students from SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Delhi two-year and four-year programs participated in the competition. Turf Bowl coordinator, David Chinery, with the Rensselaer County Cornell Cooperative Extension, conducted this year’s event. High-scoring teams and individuals were awarded cash prizes, ribbons, a one-year student membership to NYSTA, Turf Bowl trophies, and the honor of displaying the silver Turf Bowl at their school.
Winners in the four-year individual competition are as follows:
· First Place – Seth Markley, SUNY Cobleskill - $300;
· Second Place – Todd Czepiel, SUNY Cobleskill - $200; and
· Third Place – Todd Frary, SUNY Cobleskill - $100.
Winners in the two-year individual competition are as follows:
· First Place – Timothy Christian, SUNY Cobleskill - $300;
· Second Place – Gary Powers, SUNY Cobleskill - $200; and
· Third Place – Tom Martone, SUNY Delhi - $100.
Students from SUNY Cobleskill won the four-year team and the two-year team competitions. Members of the four-year team include Markley, Czepiel, Frary and Brenton Whitney. Members of the two-year team include Christian, Powers, Adam Holligan and Ben Bradish.
