New owners of Capitol City Golf Course are planning several upgrades to the course and facilities over the next several months.
The Redmond firm Access Golf Management bought the 18-hole course at 5225 Yelm Highway S.E. last month from American Golf Corporation of Santa Monica, Calif., said Jason Matzat, chief financial officer for the new owners.
Matzat declined to reveal terms of the sale.
The Olympia course is popular with senior golfers and others because its sandy soil allows it to stay relatively dry during Northwest winters.
"It's a good all-weather course," said Tom Weston, 68, of Olympia. "It's good in wet weather and has good greens. And it has lots of activities for seniors."
Weston said he wants to see some things stay the same at the course, but he would welcome other changes.
"I hope they don't raise the rates," he said. "But I'd like to see them improve the conditioning of the course, the sand traps and the course in general."
Mazat said course improvements have already begun.
"It was in moderate shape, not fantastic shape when we bought it," Matzat said. "It used to have a great reputation. All it takes is a little TLC."
Mazat said the owners have begun replacing sand in some of the bunkers during the slower months and plan to enlarge greens and upgrade fairways.
The new owners are remodeling the restaurant, including a new paint job, and expect to reopen in a pub format within a couple of months, Matzat said.
The new owners manage the Fire Creek Grill at Kent's Riverbend golf course. They also manage Redmond's Willows Run and Maple Valley's Druids Glen courses, Matzat said.
The owners plan a May "grand re-opening," Matzat said.
Access Golf Management also manages courses owned by Seattle Seahawks owner Paul Allen, but Allen was not involved with the purchase of Capitol City Golf Course.
