Cumberland Trail Golf Club in the Columbus suburb of Pataskala, Ohio, is under new ownership.
“We have a very diverse group of owners which helps us cover every aspect of the business very thoroughly,” said Tom Scheetz, one of the new partners. Scheetz is a nationally known course management superintendent, and has worked with a variety of private clubs across the country. He most recently was golf course superintendent at Stonewater Golf Club and Little Mountain Country Club, both in the Northeast Ohio area.
Also a partner in Cumberland Trail is Jimmy Hanlin, who was named 2007 Northern Ohio PGA Golf Professional of the Year. Along with his pro status, Hanlin co-hosts a weekly radio golf show in the Cleveland area on WKNR , and also hosts “Tee it Up Ohio” on SportsTime Ohio, the Cleveland Indians new television network.
“If we implement our basic fundamentals, as we did at Little Mountain, we will make Cumberland Trail a destination golf course from across the region,” Hanlin said. “Hurdzan and Fry courses provide such a great golf experience, and if you add excellent customer service to that, you have a winner.”
The principals also own Little Mountain Country Club, which, like Cumberland Trail, was designed by world renowned Columbus- based golf course designers Mike Hurdzan and Dana Fry. Under their leadership, Little Mountain was one of only 17 public golf courses in America and the only course in the state of Ohio to be awarded the Five Star rating by Golf Digest for 2006 and 2007. Little Mountain also as rated one on the nation’s top golf courses for service by the Zagat Survey, which produces a series of paperback guidebooks and maintains a website dedicated to providing impartial reviews of restaurants and travel destinations.
Cumberland Trail will remain a daily fee course and is now booking traveling groups and events for the 2007 season. The new owners also are developing membership options that will benefit small businesses and individual golfers.
