Nevada golf courses set new landscape conversion record

Links in the southern part of the state converted 6.7 million sqaure feet of grass in 2007.

Golf courses in Southern Nevada this year have set a new record for landscape conversions, trading more than 6.7 million square feet of grass for water-efficient landscaping, according to the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA).

SNWA conservation manager Doug Bennett said the 2007 efforts of the golf industry have exceeded the previous peak year of 2004. Collectively, these projects save nearly 1.2 billion gallons annually. In addition to cumulative water savings realized by local golf courses, the community as a whole used 18 billion gallons less in 2006 than 2002, despite adding 330,000 new residents and nearly 40 million annual visitors.
