National one of best in state

National Golf Club (Southern Pines, N.C.) retains 14th ranking in North Carolina's top 100.

For the second straight year, National Golf Club has been voted No. 14 in the ranking of North Carolina's top 100 golf courses conducted by North Carolina magazine.

The ranking covers all of the estimated 565 golf courses in North Carolina, putting National in the top 3 percent. The course received 2,552 points in voting by the magazine's 135-member golf panel. The course was ranked 15th in the state in 2003.

"We believe Jack Nicklaus created a wonderful course here and we're glad the rankings committee feels the same way," says director of golf Tom Parsons. "I think our focus on continued improvements over the last few years has helped solidify a nice ranking."

The Nicklaus Signature course at National opened for play in late 1988. It measures 7,122 yards from the tips. In recent years it has twice hosted the first stage of PGA Tour qualifying, and last year was a qualifying site for the U.S. Open.

"The layout stands out," Parsons says. "Every hole is unique and the shot values are as good as you'll find anywhere. And, our greens challenge your short game and putting game."

Parsons said the recent commitment to upgrade course conditions at National will continue under new general manager Ken Crow, who came to the club this past fall.

Although private, National does allow a limited amount of outside play. For information or to make a tee time, call 800-471-4339, or visit www.nationalgolfclub.com.
