Las Vegas, N.M. -- Among the legislative appropriations to benefit New Mexico Highlands University is an estimated $1.55 million for renovation and early stages of development of the school's golf course property, according to school officials.

Legislation will fund renovation -- primarily tapping into its own water wells and possibly a city effluent line to water greens and fairways -- of the New Mexico Highlands University Gene Torres Golf Course.

Plans for the surrounding 165 acres, owned by Highlands, include approximately 200 half-acre lots for mid-range homes to be sold to developers or individuals, according to a news release from NMHU. In addition, the university will build a four-bedroom presidential home on a half-acre lot. Regents last year approved the latter project.

Sales price for the lots would depend on demand and lot size, university officials say. Profits would be used "to improve infrastructure, to build dorms, buy new vehicles and pay outstanding debts," according to the release.
