“It’s not easy to get 11 golf courses on the same page with regard to tee times and lodging,” says Mike McGeath, who administers the Arthur Hills Michigan Golf Trail central reservation system for the 11-course cooperative. “The golf and lodging quality has been there since we formed the Trail in 2004, but arranging itineraries was more difficult for golfers than it had to be. We believe our new central reservation system is the last piece of the puzzle.”
To mark nearly 40 years of golfing collaboration, Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates partnered in 2004 with 11 upscale public-access courses in Michigan to create the Arthur Hills Michigan Golf Trail.
The Trail includes:
· Bay Harbor Golf Club in Petoskey
· The Arthur Hills Course at Boyne Highlands in Boyne Falls
· Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills
· Forest Akers Golf Club in East Lansing
· HawksHead in South Haven
· Lakes of Taylor Golf Course in Taylor
· Lyon Oaks Golf Club in Wixom
· Pheasant Run Golf Club in Canton
· Red Hawk Golf Club in East Tawas
· Taylor Meadows Golf Course in Taylor
· Thoroughbred Golf Club at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury.
Two Trail venues were recently named to Golf Digest’s list of “100 Greatest Public Courses” – No. 35, Bay Harbor GC (Links/Quarry) and No. 66, Red Hawk GC.
“As a firm, we don’t emphasize rankings. We’re more concerned with building the best possible golf course a particular piece of property will yield,” says Arthur Hills, founder and principal of Toledo, Ohio-based Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates. “However, we appreciate that our clients and the golfers who play their courses pay close attention to such matters, and it’s gratifying to see that Golf Digest raters see the quality in our work.
We’ve done some of our best work in Michigan, perhaps because few states offer such a broad diversity of landscapes and environments. In my opinion, that’s what makes the Trail such great fun. It’s a tasting menu of the best Michigan golf has to offer.”
All 11 Arthur Hills Michigan Golf Trail courses are rated three and half stars or better (out of five) according to Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” ranking.
