Lloyd Syron thought he had a gold mine to pass along to his daughter and grandchildren -- the scenic Pontiac Country Club in Waterford Township. Now, he's thinking about selling the 18-hole golf course before it becomes a financial sinkhole.
For Syron, a 25 percent drop in revenue in recent years forced him to confront a hard reality -- Michigan's golf industry is in trouble.
Betting on a major golf boom, developers furiously built more than 100 golf courses in Michigan in the past decade. Michigan now has 852 courses -- more than every state except Florida and California, according to the National Golf Foundation.
