Mesa Country Club in Mesa, Arizona, is preparing a significant renovation of its golf course. The plans are a part of the 75th anniversary of the club. According to the club, the project is its largest and biggest investment since the William F. Bell-designed course opened in 1948. Bell’s most famous designs are the North and South courses at California’s Torrey Pines.
“All the greens will be rebuilt to USGA standards, greenside bunkers will be renovated to improve playability and, importantly, a new irrigation system will ensure significant water reduction usage,” said Neil Baier, President of club board. “We are also upgrading our clubhouse facilities. In the next few years, Mesa Country Club will be one of the region’s top membership choices.”
Scottsdale-based Staples Golf Design has been hired to manage the project, which will start this summer.
“The big news item here is the water conservation work in relation to the irrigation system upgrade, the lake reduction plan and the low water use areas in out of play areas,” said Andy Staples, President of Staples Golf. “This will address the water issues and the upcoming state mandates.”
The club is one of the few courses in the Phoenix area that features eucalyptus and pine tree-lining fairways throughout the holes. A plateau runs through the course and creates elevation changes. Despite the plateau, the course is completely walkable. PGA Tour player Joel Dahmen is a popular member of the club.
