Members of the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club have killed a deal that would have seen their 50-year-old course move south of the city and be replaced with a large residential development.
More than 200 club members turned out to a town hall meeting last Thursday and in a questionnaire resoundingly shot down the proposal by WestCreek Developments to replace the course with a multimillion-dollar housing development, in exchange for a new 36-hole course to be built south of the current location.
"The No. 1 thing is there is no real motivation for our members to leave," said Dwayne Blume, general manager of Canyon Meadows golf course. "Our members have a progressive plan for renovations and revitalization and they want to see that done."
Blume shared the results of last week's survey with WestCreek and a mutual decision was made to kill the deal.
"Obviously we're disappointed," said Bravin Goldade, president of WestCreek. "We wished both the golf course and ourselves had more time to deal with the proposal, but time was not on our side."
