Los Angeles – James N. Ward was appointed golf manager for the city of Los Angeles, Calif.
Ward had been serving as acting golf manager since April 20 this year, managing and directing the city’s golf division – encompassing 13 golf courses (including the youth Tregnan Golf Academy); junior, men’s and women’s golf clubs associated with the Municipal Golf Association; municipal golf tournaments; restaurants, concessions, golf pro stores and an automated golf reservation system – altogether generating $31 million in net revenue.
“We’re very competitive in the market and have fantastic facilities, the top in the Southland,” says Ward, citing Wilson/Harding Municipal Golf Course’s No. 1 rank among Southern California golf courses on KCAL News’ “9 On The Town” listing. “We have close to over 100,000 rounds per course, per year. Those are huge numbers. It’s the largest municipal golf course system within the U.S. All courses together, we have over 1.1 million rounds per year.”
With 29 years of experience in the golf industry, Ward is a certified member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America as well as past-president and member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of Southern California. He said his primary goals as golf manager are to strengthen youth golf and Municipal Golf Association clubs as well as improving the quality of the golf courses and maintaining reasonable fees.
A graduate of Cal Poly Pomona with a bachelor’s degree in park administration, Ward also is president of the City of Glendale Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission; a State of California Agricultural Pest Control advisor and a member of the California Park and Recreation Society.
