Lesson benefit hurricane relief fund

Pros from courses across Kauai offering individual and group lessons.

Lihue, Kauai – Puakea Golf Course will host a lesson day Oct. 8 featuring golf professionals from courses across the Garden Island to raise money for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

For a $20 donation to the American Red Cross, players will receive a 10-minute individual golf lesson. Participating PGA professionals include Rich Fite and Todd Stewart of Kauai Lagoons, Ron Castillo of Kiahuna Golf Club, Chad Doonesbury and Craig Sasada of Poipu Bay, Eric Belmonte and Tom Freestone of Princeville at Hanalei, Paul Ito, Clayton McGowan and Kellie Pleas of Puakea and Matthew Mack and Glenn Tamagawa of Wailua Municipal Golf Course.

A free group clinic will kick the day off at 10 a.m. and another group lesson will be conducted at noon. The individual lessons will be offered until 3 p.m. and reservations can be made in advance by calling the Puakea pro shop at 808-245-8756.

After Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai in 1992, construction of Puakea Golf Course was halted for several years. The course was completed in 2003. Residents of the island, as well as visitors, understand the impact of these natural disasters and have been moved by recent events.

“Puakea and all of the golf facilities on Kauai want to do something to help the relief effort for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita,” says Puakea’s PGA director of golf Paul Ito. “Our hearts go out to the Gulf Coast. The upcoming lesson day is a great way to raise much-needed resources and to have fun in the process.”

Puakea’s practice facility features grass tees and a large putting green. Golf course architect Robin Nelson designed the 18-hole championship golf course.
