Kemper retains environmental status

Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer, Ill., has retained its designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System.

Kildeer, Ill. – Kemper Lakes Golf Club has retained its designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System – the educational division of Audubon International. Superintendent Dan Tully led the effort to maintain sanctuary status on this course and is being recognized for environmental stewardship by Audubon International.

Kemper Lakes Golf Club has been designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 2000 and is one of only 577 courses in the world to receive the honor.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program for golf courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe and Southeast Asia have achieved certification in the program.

“Kemper Lakes Golf Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program,” says Jeremy Taylor, staff ecologist for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary programs. “They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property.”

To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas, Taylor adds. These categories include: environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation, and water quality management. Courses go through a recertification process every two years.

“The Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary designation means a lot to the staff and members at Kemper Lakes Golf Club,” says general manager Janet Dobson. “We feel it is important to do as much as we can to improve the environmental characteristics of this special piece of land.”

Kemper Lakes Golf Club is located in Kildeer on 276 acres of scenic lake country.
