Maui, Hawaii - Kaanapali Golf Courses - a Billy Casper Golf-managed property - announced the Tournament North Course is undergoing a number of layout renovations and will reopen for play in November.
As part of a two-year, $13-million investment to enhance Kaanapali's courses and golf facilities, Robin Nelson - the designer with more than 30 courses in Hawaii to his credit - is overseeing the work on the North Course. Last year, Nelson completed a successful redesign of Kaanapali's Resort South Course.
"We are excited to begin upgrading the storied Tournament North Course," says PGA general manager Ed Kageyama. "Nelson's renovations will be more of a nip/tuck approach than a complete overhaul of the layout."
Tifeagle Bermudagrass will be used on the North's putting surfaces - the same turf used during last year's renovation of the Resort South Course. The tees, fairways and rough will be converted to a hybrid Bermuda variety.
"Greens with Tifeagle Bermuda are a revelation to putt as we've seen on the Resort South Course," Kageyama says. "Not only do the surfaces roll quick and true, this premier turf grass will help to bring out all the subtleties of Robin Nelson's brilliant greens."
Phase I of the multimillion dollar project began with the renovation of the Resort South Course in April of 2005. Emphasizing the property's royal Hawaiian roots - Kaanapali was once playground to families of the Island's kings and queens - the logo shop was also remodeled using ample woods in an array of shades and styles. The new space features natural-style furniture and fixtures, and has an abundance of resort and aloha apparel for all guests, in addition to the traditional logo golf styles. The welcoming ambience of the new logo shop and entryway will please players prior to an enjoyable round on Kaanapali's ocean-front links.
"As part of the facelift to the North, we will add and alter landscaping to improve the definition of several holes," Kageyama says. "The new bunkering will also be visually striking. Guests can look forward to a whole new look and feel to the Kaanapali experience later this fall."
