The trial was planted October 2005 into an existing Tifway II bermudagrass fairway. Southern superintendents annually overseed to provide green winter playing conditions. The test results are a real-world endorsement for the high performance of these new ryegrasses. Results also apply to permanent turfs planted in the north.
La Quinta (JR-255), Revenge GLX (JR-348), and Monterey III (JR-408) had the best turf quality and color and were the top entries in the trial. Our four other new varieties, Goalkeeper (JR-114), Accent II (JR-119), Top Gun II (JR-324) and Caddieshack II (JR-163) also topped the commercial varieties and blends in the trial.
Transition ratings were taken on May 5 to determine if the varieties were allowing the Tifway to return. The original Caddieshack plots had the most returning bermuda, Pizzazz the least.
Superintendents prefer varieties that provide a seamless return of the bermuda stand in late spring. Caddieshack II transitioned best among the new generation of ryes. Craig Shafer, Simplot Partners representative in
The replicated trial contained seven new Jacklin ryegrasses, six current Jacklin varieties, and seven other industry varieties and blends that are used in the desert. Simplot Partners blends will be updated this fall to include the top new varieties to provide better performance in the desert.
