Jack Nicklaus to open Toro WaterSmart Symposium

Nicklaus’s presentation will focus on the importance of water management in golf course design.

Riverside, Calif. – Legendary golfer and course designer Jack Nicklaus will kick off Toro's Success Without Excess III WaterSmart Symposium session Wednesday July 30 at 9:00 a.m. PT. Nicklaus’s presentation will focus on the importance of water management in golf course design. The symposium will be broadcast via the Internet. Nicklaus was named GolfWorld’s Architect of the Year in 1993, and in 1999, Golf Digest named him the world’s leading active designer. In February 2005, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America recognized him with its highest honor, The Old Tom Morris Award. In 2001, Nicklaus was named recipient of both the Don A. Rossi Award (Golf Course Builders Association of America), and was honored with the International Network of Golf’s Achievement in Golf Course Design Award for 2000-2001. In addition, Nicklaus has been involved in the design of 265 courses open for play worldwide, and his thriving business, Nicklaus Design, has 330 courses open for play around the world.

Held during the Irrigation Association’s Smart Irrigation Month, Toro’s 2008 WaterSmart symposium has invited well-known industry experts to present on a variety of topics affecting worldwide water management and the irrigation industry. Additional golf course water management presenters include Dr. Mike Hurdzan, principal for Hurdzan/Fry Environmental Golf by Design, who will discuss water conservation and the effects on golf course designs, Greg Lyman, director of environmental programs at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, who will address golf compatibility with the environmental movement and Brian
Vinchesi, President of Irrigation Consulting, Inc. will address how to save water on a golf course.

Issues related to water management and irrigation best practices for the commercial and residential landscaping markets will be held on Tuesday, July 29. Sessions related to water-saving best practices for the agriculture market will be covered on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 30.
