The likelihood that someone will fall down a set of stairs outweighs the “sexy” problems associated with golf like errant golf shots or pesticide drift.

I just saw an article in another industry publication that cited slip-and-fall accidents as the No. 1 liability concern for golf course operators. Quite simply, the likelihood that someone will fall down a set of stairs or on in the locker room showers outweighs the “sexy” problems associated with golf like errant golf shots or pesticide drift.

Golf cars, as I recall, were second on the list of accidents you need to worry about. Here’s a weird (and scary) example from today’s Minneapolis Star-Tribune: New Timberwolves center Jason Collins is expected to miss eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a triceps tendon in his elbow on Monday in California.

He was injured in what a team spokesman called a “freak” accident that occurred when his golf cart skidded on wet ground and tipped over. (An editorial comment here: Golf’s a walking game anyway, especially for a fellow as young as Mr. Collins).

If he’s sidelined for exactly eight weeks, Collins, acquired from Memphis in the draft-night Love-for-O.J. Mayo deal, would miss all of training camp and the regular season’s first week.

How much does an NBA center make in a lifetime? Enough to own your course if you were found liable for an injury like this one.

There’s never a bad time to do a thorough risk assessment on your golf course … even if you don’t have pro hoops players zipping around in golf cars at your place.
