Coachella Valley facility lauded for environmental efforts

Indian Wells Golf Resort receives “Community Environmental Award” from the California Golf Course Owners Association.

Indian Wells Golf Resort recently received the “Community Environmental Award” from the California Golf Course Owners Association for demonstrating excellence in the area of Environmental Stewardship. Owned by the City of Indian Wells and managed by Troon Golf, Indian Wells Golf Resort was recognized for being one of the few golf courses in the Coachella Valley that is currently meeting or exceeding the savings proposed by the Water Management Plan and State of California water reduction guidelines.

Community Environmental Award criteria includes:
--Implements practices that reduce use of coveted resources such as water or electricity.
--Has an efficient and convenient recycling program in place for managing waste on course and in the clubhouse (includes bar, restaurant and common areas).
--Encourages on-site natural habitats for birds and other small animals
--Increases citizen awareness on how golf courses are “friends of the environment” and how golfers can support stewardship efforts

“We are proud to be the recipient of the 2017 CGCOA ‘Community Environmental Award,’” said Steve Rosen, general manager, Indian Wells Golf Resort. “Our team at Indian Wells Golf Resort proves it definitely is possible to be a great golf course while still being good stewards of the land.”

Among Indian Wells Golf Resort’s numerous environmental stewardship programs, the resort has continued to work on water reduction by removing turfgrass areas and replacing them with low water landscape areas. The facility operates daily irrigation through on site weather stations, and their agronomic fertility plan includes weekly and monthly applications of wetting agents on greens, tees and fairways. In addition, the 36-hole facility uses non-potable Colorado River water for 100 percent of its irrigation needs, converted 15 acres of high water use wildflower landscapes to low water use drip systems, removed four acres of grass and converted those areas into landscape beds with drought tolerate plants. The estimated water savings for these initiatives is more than 10 million gallons of water per year.

Indian Wells Golf Resort’s energy conservation efforts include irrigation system watering during low demand, off peak periods for Southern California Edison. All water features and lake aeration systems are operated through timers to come on in front of the first golfers each day. Water features are also turned off earlier in the day from June 1 to Sept. 30 when electric grid demand is at its highest.

To manage waste at the facility, all steel and metal products on site are recycled, as are waste oil, oil filters, antifreeze, solvent, paper, plastic, hydraulic oil, transmission fluid and tires.

In the area of wildlife management, Indian Wells Golf Resort manages populations of geese and American Coots. The resort’s two courses serve as an active wildlife area for coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, and a variety of avian species, including ducks, geese, roadrunners, and hawks. The resort also maintains active and healthy populations of fish in numerous lakes throughout the property, including catfish, bass and carp.
Finally, in an effort to increase awareness among residents and visitors about best practices concerning the environment, the Golf Resort will soon begin hosting a Desert Recreation District community program and offer monthly hosted 5k run/walks.
